Furniture Mobility Facilitates Classroom Management at Ongaonga Primary School

Flexible furniture mobility is strongly associated with classroom management. This is a fact Anne Frater – Teacher at Ongaonga Primary School in Hastings learnt since her classroom was outfitted with the Bodyfurn Alpha Side Storage Desks six months ago In trialling the desks over two terms, Anne constantly brainstormed with her students to identify the difference the Bodyfurn Alpha Side Storage Desk is making in the classroom and its effects on learning outcomes. The results showed positive feedback that revolved around physical convenience and minimal distraction.

The benefits reaped from the physical shape of the desk, according to Anne, are numerous; the round edges provide safety to both students and teachers preventing them from getting bruised, “in a busy classroom the rounded corners mean fewer bruises.” Moreover, the curve of the desk allows students to comfortably push in with their chairs without pressure on the abdominal area. Students, says Anne, also enjoy the larger area the desk provides and the smooth surface, which is beneficial when working with laptops.

The desk’s height system ensures that each student is seated on a desk that matches the chairs they are sitting on and the students’ size. Not only do students enjoy the desk but also its side storage, “they love the physical swing of the storage pod which makes it easy to access material, and the pencil case that helps them organise their stationery,” adds Anne “as a result of having these desks in the classroom, my students have been a lot tidier.”
